Staker Family

The Staker family is one of my favorite groups of people. They are seriously the absolute best. I was so happy to take these Saltair Extended Family Photos nearly 13 years after meeting this family. I met the Staker family when I was in High School at a National Skills USA competition.

The trip was in Kansas City, and for this small town girl, it was a HUGE city. I had never even flown on an airplane before this trip. I had people from my school that were traveling with me, but I didn’t know any of them. I was pretty much all by myself. They had a big group of students that all knew each other and they invited me to hangout with them.

If I remember right, both Corbin and Nate were competing in the competition. Corbin was competing at the college level. Nate was competing at the high school level. They took me under their wings and took care of me the whole trip. I tagged along when they went to dinner and even went to an amusement park with them when we had a free day. It was so fun because both Corbin and Nate’s girlfriends at the time surprised them on the trip. They showed up at the amusement park and it was one of the cutest moments. It’s so fun that both of them married those girls and now, almost 13 years later, I am photographing their extended family.

Saltair Extended Family Photos

Saltair Extended Family Photos are beautiful because of the large neutral background. There are a few things you need to know when shooting at The Great Saltair. Sometimes photographers show up and they can’t use the space. Here are my tips for shooting at The Great Saltair.

  1. Check their website for events BEFORE scheduling your session. You don’t need a permit to shoot out there, but it will be close for events throughout the year. There is nothing worse then getting out there with clients and realizing you can’t do your session. There aren’t good backup locations, so this is important. You can check the schedule here.
  2. Take bug spray. Usually the bugs don’t bite out there but when you are close to the water the mosquitoes can bad. You can’t keep taking family pictures while you are getting eaten alive.
  3. Decide ahead of time if you are going to talk out to the water or not. It’s a lot farther than it seems. Sometimes I get to the end of my session and my clients want to walk out to the water. You should plan an extra 15 minutes if you are going to spend time down by the water. It’s a much farther walk than people expect.
  4. If you do walk down to the water, then bring jackets because it can get chilly for the walk back and no one wants their children melting down after an hour of taking pictures.

Saltair extended family photos are a lot work, but they will be much easier with these tips and preparing ahead of time!

Grandkid Portrait

This sweet great grandkid portrait is one of my very favorite portraits to take during an extended family session. I grew up with two great grandma’s so it’s extra special to photograph 4 generations. Look at all those tiny kids looking at the camera. I wish I had a picture like this with my granny and cousins.

Couple Portraits

Another portrait I never forget during extended family sessions is a couple portrait or headshot. These couple portraits and individual portraits of each child and grandchild makes it so that each extended family session feels like a mini session for the larger families. I always want my clients to get the most bang for their buck.
