Fall family photos in Park City are absolutely stunning no matter what backdrop you pick. One thing I have learned from being an experienced family photographer is that we are SO LUCKY to have so much variety in locations here in Utah. A lot of photographers in other states have to make much simpler backdrops work. We are spoiled in Utah to have such a variety for fall family photos in Park City.
Park City is just one city that has everything you could dream of as far as fall backdrops go. The locations in Park City range from pine trees, yellow aspen trees and beautiful mountain ranges. Park City is beautiful all year round, but can’t be beat in the fall.
Fall family photos do require some knowledge of the area to minimize the chaos that comes with family photos. In Park City you need to know when the leaves peak, if you need a permit, and where you can park. This fall was exceptionally difficult when it comes to shooting in less crowded locations. I have been shooting in the same fall locations for years, but switched it up this year.
The absolute insane crowds at some of my favorite fall locations in Salt Lake City, made it impossible to shoot. I location scouted for hours upon hours to refresh my locations for my clients. I used to share all of my favorite spots, but I’ve had to stop in recent years. Locations are getting shut down due to oversharing and people being disrespectful.
I think the recent spike in travel vlogging, viral tik-toks, and content creation has really increased popularity in Utah destinations. I’m not saying one type of recreation or content creator is more entitled to these locations than another, but I do think the spread of locations isn’t sustainable and we need solutions for respecting the land, but I digress.
I have lots of tips on how to find your own locations on this blog post and even a free guide you can download here.
I genuinely don’t care who takes your family photos. I don’t mean this in a rude way, I just cannot possibly take everyone’s photos. Knowing this helps photographers value community over competition. I do believe everyone should take family photos, which is why I like to share tips and tricks online.
One thing to remember when taking fall family photos is that fall happens at different times in every part of Utah. Fall family photos in Park City need to happen earlier in the season. Park City is at a higher altitude so the leaves begin to change earlier. If you wait to long for fall family photos all the fall colors will be gone. I would say that a typical fall season in Park City starts the second week of September and goes until the second week of October.
I switched from a Salt Lake City location to this Park City location last minute because of crowds. My clients were so accommodating to switch so last minute. When I drove around just a few days prior this spot still had tons of fall colors. Utah got a few cold nights and the leaves dropped quickly. I was kind of freaking out when I showed up to this location the evening of my mini sessions. There was literally only one tree left with color on it. In the past I would have freaked out and not known what to do. After years of taking stressful fall family photos I know now, that one tree is all you need. I am a PRO at making the most I can out of one small spot.
We stayed close to this one tree until the end of our shoot. Even without fall colors the mountain backdrop is beautiful.
